President Obama announced Sunday that he authorized an attack to kill Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan.

“This a good and historic day for both of our nations,” Obama said.

During the announcement, Obama said the United States received a tip regarding Bin Laden’s whereabouts. On Tuesday, Obama said he received intelligence that confirmed the tip. On Sunday, Obama gave the order to attack the compound.

“The death of Bin Laden marks a signficant achievement to date” in the effort against terrorism, Obama said.

Obama reiterated in his speech that America would protect itself and its allies, but it was not at war with Islam.

“The United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. Our war is not against Islam,” he said.
