Beyonce has received a lot of awards and recognition in her day, including her most recent appointment to People Magazine’s List of the Worlds’ Most Beautiful People. And for the most part I would have to say Bey deserved the awards and recognition. But, um … the award she will receive on May 15 …not so much.
The New York Association of Black Journalists announced that they were giving Beyonce an award for her cover article in last summer’s issue of Essence titled, “Eat, Play, Love.”
But really, an award?
I mean, it is not like the piece was riveting. It was … well, mediocre. And if we are being honest about everything (We are, right?), then we must also acknowledge the fact that Beyonce probably didn’t really write the piece and if she did there was some heavy editing by the Essence staff.
I am actually pretty confused by NY NABJ’s decision to give this award to Beyonce – confused and appalled. Awards for excellence in writing should be given to those who deserve them, not for favor (because I am convinced that they want something from her … or owed her a favor). #ijs.
