Black women and our natural hair is a sticky topic of discussion. There are full documentaries, TV shows and panels all around the U.S. dedicated to debating it. MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry recently dedicated an entire segment of her show (sharing her namesake) to the curly, kinky, coily, thick illustrious hair that Black women have growing from their scalps.
According to Huffington Post, Melissa’s “Black Hair 101” video that inspired University of Pennsylvania religious professor, Anthea Butler to create a symposium on Black hair. It was there at the forum where Butler had the urge to snatch her own wig from her head and show the audience her “Cleo” cornrows. Her hair was then styled to show the versatility and the beauty of Black hair. Rather dramatic, but you get the point, right?
