According to officials, an Army civilian employee was shot and killed in a parking lot at Kentucky’s Fort Knox on Wednesday and investigators were questioning a suspect believed to be the culprit.

Army officials released information late Wednesday that the victim was an employee of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, which handles personnel actions for soldiers. The shooting occurred in a parking lot outside the command and it’s believed that a 5-foot, 9-inch black American man using a black Yamaha motorcycle for transportation committed this personal crime.

The victim was transported to the Ireland Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. ET. The base was placed on full lockdown, but it was lifted early Wednesday evening, the official said.

The military base, which sprawls over 170 miles in three counties about 30 miles south of Louisville, Ky., is separate from but adjacent to the famous federal gold depository.
