You may have heard the story about the Utah school throwing away lunches of students that had negative balances on their accounts. Well, it’s sparking some good will and action across the country! A tutor and mentor at Valley Oaks Elementary School in Houston, Kenny Thompson learned that over 60 students at his school were eating cold sandwiches for lunch because of overdue balances on their accounts and has paid off their balances – to the tune of $465!

“It was the best money I ever spent,” Thompson, 52, told TODAY.com. “It was the best gift I ever gave myself. I went into my car and screamed.”

Hearing about the kids in Utah,  Thompson decided to look into the issue in his own community, finding that some kids with overdue balances were eating cold cheese sandwiches.   Many were already on reduced lunch, suggesting that there are already financial challenges in the home.

Thompson’s actions are  inspiring others across the country. Hopefully you’ll be motivated to help in some way as well!
