In stunning fashion, congressional candidate Greensboro-based Alma Adams handily defeated Charlotte frontrunners Malcolm Graham and George Battle in the Democratic primary for former congressman Mel Watts’ vacated seat. She will face Republican challenger and former TV anchor Vince Coakley. Adams won with more than 40 percent of the vote, avoiding a run-off.

In other primary news, former city council member Ella Scarborough was the top vote-getter for an at-large seat on the Board of County Commissioners. Her victory bumped one-term incumbent Kim Ratliffe. At-large incumbents Pat Cotham and Trevor Fuller also won in the primary.

Sen. Kay Hagan will square-off against challenger Thom Tillis in one what will be one of the most-watched senate races in the country. The general election is Nov. 4.
