Excerpt: Several years ago, I noticed a newly-elected Charlotte City Councilwoman named LaWana Mayfield. What caught my attention was that she had long beautiful Locs. Charlotte prides itself on being the progressive city of the “New South”, but most of our elected officials look more like slightly modern versions of characters from The Andy Griffith Show.
