Detroit mother arrested after young son finds gun, shoots self

A mother is under arrest on Detroit’s west side after her 4-year-old boy received a gunshot wound in their home. The boy, Jaylen Lum, is being treated at the hospital in temporary serious condition. It happened around 10 p.m. Monday in the 6200 block of Minock, which is near the intersection of Evergreen and Ford roads.

Latasha Lum told police she was sleeping when her child somehow was able to get the gun off of her. She told police her gun was on her hip lodged in a holster. When the child got the gun, it went off and he was shot in the thigh. Police have taken the mother into custody on child neglect charges after questioning her for several hours. Police say the child told authorities he found the gun on a table, not on the mother’s holster.

The child’s uncle, Joshua Wilson, says Latasha is a hard worker who works midnights and that she usually keeps everything protected. Jaylen is expected to recover. When he is released from the hospital, he’s expected to stay in the custody of his maternal grandmother.
