VIA THE FLY PAPER

In a pop culture landscape in which women are increasingly sexualized and commodified, are the latest crop of raunchy girls a trend or shift in pop culture?

The Fly Paper’s Kay Jay argues a new fad of “dirty girls” has taken over. Prior to this, women were stereotypically known for holding households together: taking care of the kids, doing chores and cooking, all while working and bringing income into their homes. But now it seems women are no longer concerned about being smart, responsible members of society. Because of the change in pop culture, the focus has shifted now towards women being more provocative, crude, rude, violent, and in-your-face.

Women are multi-faceted. There is a still a segment of women portray the working mom and there has always been a segment of rowdy devil-may-care women. Entertainment shows currently exploit bombastic women. Eventually the entertainment world will shift back to a conservative portrayal of women, and we’ll complain about that too. The majority of women are somewhere in the middle, but the middle doesn’t make good entertainment which is why we rarely see the women in our lives portrayed on TV.

What do you think? Is the dirty girl trend a pop culture shift or simply the latest trend?
