Amaye believes so strongly in her dream of becoming a professional singer that she dropped out of N.C. A&T her junior to pursue a career singing. On Saturday, Amaye (who uses one name), will get one of her best chances of landing a national recording contract.

Amaye is one of more than a dozen singers participating in the finale of the Andre Harrell Superstar Soul Search in Atlanta on Saturday. She and J. Remy shared first place in the Charlotte semi-finals a couple of weeks ago at the House of Jazz. Now, she will compete against winners from Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Detroit.

Amaye is a Baltimore native who recently moved to Atlanta. She attended A&T a few years ago and studied chemistry. She was on a pre-med track when she decided chemistry was getting in the way of her dream. She performed in the Greensboro area band Beautiful Experience. One night she had a gig and she needed to study for a chemistry test. Amaye said it was then that she decided to pursue music full-time.

“I decided that music is where my heart is,” she said.

Hopefully her heart won’t lead her astray because when she dropped out school her parents truly thought she’d lost her mind.
