On the steps of a small, antiquated fire escape he tries to maneuver his tall, dark, and scrumptious physique into a comfortable position. Eyes glazed over the banister; Malik Yoba sees his old playing grounds, Soho. Taking us back to the beginning, it is obvious that Malik’s fondest memories of his journey to manhood have yet to be jaded by his latest success. Guided by his father’s pearls of wisdom, he has managed to “fill the cracks in the pavement” in Why Did I Get Married Too by recognizing the need to further explore the psyches of men and women. Inextricably linked by love, Malik strives to educate people about the fundamental differences of the two sexes.

With a purple scarf adorning his neck, he exudes a man sure of himself. But as the planets don’t always align, Venus vs. Mars seems to be the never-ending saga that even Gavin (Malik) can’t quite wrap his fingers around. Lucky for us Malik’s character gets to reverse the roles, portraying the man as the vulnerable and compassionate one, finally allowing us to see the not-so-simple truths behind the unspoken dialect between the two opposing forces.

Malik Yoba will speak at the Booth Playhouse in the N.C. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center at 6 p.m. on April 10. Tickets: $15 in advance and $25 at the door. There is also a VIP reception for special guests and advance ticket holders.
