The U.S. Supreme Court announced this morning that it will not consider reinstating North Carolina’s 2013 elections law which requires voters to present a voter ID and includes other restrictions on voting. The law required voters to show specific kinds of photo identification and prohibited same day registration and voting. It also denied out-of-precinct and early voting, as well as preregistration for 16- and 17-year-olds who would turn 18 by Election Day.
The court indicated that it would leave a lower court ruling banning the law as it is, indicating that the restrictions “target African Americans with almost surgical precision.”
