A North Carolina federal court has rejected the state’s GOP-drawn congressional map, saying the districts as outlined,  result in partisan gerrymandering.  A panel of three judges ruled that North Carolina Republicans divided the districts in an excessively partisan manner when previously ordered to redraw the state’s congressional map, violating equal protection mandates.

No further elections will be permitted under the current map and the court ordered the state to redraw the map before the 2018 midterm elections.

The Supreme Court ruled last year, that the state illegally packed black voters into two congressional districts by using race as the predominant factor in drawing the districts.
