Former NAACP head Ben Jealous will offer his endorsement of Democratic Party presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders on Friday. Frances Hooks, the civil rights leader and widow of Benjamin Hooks, died Thursday.

Barbara Dawson, 57 died early Monday morning after a limited stay at Liberty Calhoun Hospital. Dawson arrived at the hospital on Sunday at about 10:30 p.m. with complaints of intense stomach pains.

The Greater Birmingham Ministries and the Alabama NAACP on Wednesday filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Alabama, alleging that officials violated the Constitution and the Voting Rights Act when they enacted a strict Voter ID law.

The shutdown, attended by nearly 300 protesters, began at 7:00 p.m. In the end, 43 adults and eight juveniles were arrested and charged with unlawful assembly and pedestrian on the freeway, the state patrol confirmed.
